Short answer

Dark urine when you are not dehydrated can result from food, medicines, blood, muscle pigment, or liver and urinary conditions.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Food, medicines, blood, muscle pigment, and liver or urinary problems remain possible explanations.

Possible explanations

Some foods, supplements, and medicines alter urine colour without changing hydration. Blood can make urine pink, red, or brown, while pigment released after intense muscle injury can make it tea-coloured and may occur with marked muscle pain or weakness. Liver or bile-flow problems can darken urine and may also cause yellow eyes or skin, pale stools, itching, nausea, or unusual tiredness.

A dark appearance can also come from the container, toilet water, or vaginal bleeding rather than the urine itself. Looking at a fresh clean-catch sample helps. Colour is a clue, not a diagnosis, and normal fluid intake does not rule out a problem that needs testing.

How to check the change

Review new medicines, vitamins, supplements, foods, exercise, and symptoms from the time the colour changed. Take a photograph in good light if it is intermittent, and note whether the urine is clear or cloudy. Keep drinking normally unless you have been given a fluid restriction. Arrange a review for unexplained, recurring, or persistent dark urine; urine testing and blood tests may help identify the source.

When to seek care

Seek urgent care for severe muscle pain or weakness with tea-coloured urine, severe side or back pain, heavy visible blood, inability to pass urine, confusion, fainting, or repeated vomiting. Prompt medical review is also needed with fever, yellowing of the eyes or skin, pale stools, or dark urine that remains unexplained. These warning signs call for assessment even when hydration seems adequate.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which urine and blood tests fit your symptoms, whether any medicine or supplement could explain the shade, and whether recent exercise or muscle pain matters. Mention bleeding, pain, fever, bowel changes, recent illness, and the exact time the colour began.
