Dark urine with a burning sensation: what it can mean

Colour and discomfort provide clues but do not identify one diagnosis by themselves. Notice whether the urine is amber, brown, red, or tea-coloured, and whether the burning occurs at the start or throughout urination.

Strong-smelling, dark yellow urine may occur when you have not taken in enough fluid, especially after sweating, vomiting, diarrhoea, or a long period in heat. Dehydration can make urine more concentrated and may increase irritation. Heat exhaustion can also cause thirst, weakness, headache, dizziness, nausea, and heavy sweating or later reduced sweating.

Burning can come from inflammation or infection in the urinary tract, irritation from products, or a sexually transmitted infection. Dark, smoky, or red urine may reflect blood and should be checked. Brown or tea-coloured urine, particularly with yellowing of the eyes or skin, pale stools, itching, nausea, or pain under the right ribs, can point to a liver or bile problem such as hepatitis A or hepatitis B.

Some foods, vitamins, and medicines can change urine colour without causing harm, but they do not explain away burning that continues. A clinician may test a urine sample and ask about fluids, medicines, fever, discharge, pain, and recent sexual contact.

If you feel well and the urine is simply darker than usual, drink fluids regularly and watch for improvement as you urinate. Avoid alcohol while you are unwell, and avoid scented washes or other products that sting the genital area. Do not take leftover antibiotics; the correct treatment depends on the cause.

Arrange a medical review if burning lasts, returns, or is accompanied by frequent urination, urgency, lower abdominal pain, fever, discharge, or a change toward red or brown urine. Bring a list of medicines and supplements, and mention pregnancy or a possible new sexual exposure when relevant.

Seek urgent medical help for dark urine with severe or one-sided back pain, fever with shaking chills, repeated vomiting, confusion, fainting, inability to pass urine, or visible blood or clots. Get prompt assessment for yellow skin or eyes, very pale stools, marked weakness, or worsening pain.

After heavy heat exposure, urgent care is needed for confusion, collapse, inability to drink, or symptoms that are worsening rather than settling after cooling and fluids. These features can signal a more serious problem than simple concentrated urine.

Ask: Could this be a urinary infection or another source of irritation? Do I need a urine test or tests for liver function? Could any medicine, supplement, food, or recent sexual exposure explain the change? Which symptoms should make me seek same-day care?
