Dark, strong-smelling urine: what to know

Urine becomes darker and more noticeable in smell when it is concentrated, such as after sweating, fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, or not drinking enough. Certain foods, vitamins, and medicines can also alter colour or odour. Heat Exhaustion can cause fluid loss alongside thirst, headache, dizziness, weakness, or heavy sweating. Dark urine with yellowing of the eyes or skin, pale stools, nausea, or upper abdominal discomfort can occur with liver inflammation such as Hepatitis A or Hepatitis B. These symptoms do not establish a diagnosis by themselves.

Consider what you drank, ate, or took recently, and whether you have been sweating or losing fluids. Drink fluids gradually if you can do so safely, and observe whether the urine lightens. Arrange medical advice if the colour or smell persists, keeps returning, or appears without an obvious explanation. A urine sample and other tests may help separate concentration, infection, liver-related changes, or another cause.

Seek urgent help for dark urine with confusion, fainting, severe weakness, inability to keep fluids down, very little urine, high fever, severe pain, or yellow skin or eyes. After heat exposure, worsening dizziness, headache, weakness, or altered behaviour needs prompt assessment. Pain or burning when urinating with fever or back pain also warrants timely care.
