Short answer

Dark rust-colored urine may come from concentrated urine, blood, muscle pigment, food or medicines, or a liver-related problem, so persistent or unexplained change needs medical assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer

Dark rust-colored urine may come from concentrated urine, blood, muscle pigment, food or medicines, or a liver-related problem, so persistent or unexplained change needs medical assessment. The color alone cannot identify the cause. Notice whether the urine is tea-colored, reddish-brown, cloudy, or accompanied by pain, fever, yellowing of the skin, or reduced urine output. These details help a clinician decide whether urine testing, blood tests, or another examination is appropriate.

What dark rust-colored urine can mean

Dehydration commonly makes urine darker because the kidneys conserve water and the urine becomes more concentrated. Heat exhaustion may also occur alongside concentrated urine, especially after heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, headache, or nausea. A red or brown appearance can instead reflect blood from the urinary tract, although food, supplements, and medicines can also alter urine color.

Liver inflammation can cause dark urine when bile pigments pass into the urine. Hepatitis A and hepatitis B may present with dark urine together with tiredness, poor appetite, nausea, abdominal discomfort, pale stools, or yellow skin and eyes. Severe muscle injury can release a pigment that turns urine dark brown, particularly after strenuous activity, a crush injury, or marked muscle pain.

What to do now

If you feel well and the change followed sweating, exercise, vomiting, or diarrhea, rest in a cool place and drink fluids gradually if you can keep them down. Do not force fluids if a clinician has advised you to restrict them. Check the color again after rehydrating and note any new symptoms. Review recent foods, supplements, and medicines, but do not stop a prescribed medicine without professional advice.

Arrange a medical appointment if the color does not return to your usual shade, keeps recurring, or has no clear explanation. A clinician may ask about fluid loss, exercise, injuries, menstrual or vaginal bleeding, urinary symptoms, and medicines. Testing can distinguish blood, bile pigments, infection, and muscle pigment more reliably than appearance alone.

When to seek urgent care

Seek urgent medical care for dark urine with very little or no urine, severe side or abdominal pain, fever with feeling very unwell, fainting, confusion, repeated vomiting, or marked muscle weakness or pain. Get prompt assessment if the urine looks bloody, if you have yellow skin or eyes, or if symptoms began after a significant injury. Heat exhaustion with worsening weakness, confusion, or inability to drink needs urgent help.

Call emergency services for collapse, severe confusion, trouble breathing, or a person who cannot safely drink or stay awake. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or confused.

Questions for your doctor

You could ask: Could this be dehydration, blood, bile pigment, or muscle pigment? Which urine or blood tests would clarify the cause? Could any of my medicines or supplements change the color? Do my pain, fever, bowel changes, or yellowing suggest a liver or urinary problem? What changes should prompt same-day care?
