Dark round spots under armpits: what they may mean

A flat brown or grey mark may be post-inflammatory pigment after shaving, friction, or a healed spot. A raised tender bump points more toward an inflamed follicle, while several similar bumps around hairs can fit folliculitis. New bumps after close shaving may resemble razor bumps. Acne can also affect the underarm area, although the armpit is especially prone to sweat and rubbing. The colour may remain after the original irritation settles.

Notice whether the spots itch, hurt, drain, scale, enlarge, or change after deodorant or hair removal. A clear photo taken in consistent light can help a clinician compare changes without repeatedly rubbing the area.

Pause shaving or waxing over active bumps, wash gently, and pat the area dry. Choose loose, breathable clothing and avoid scrubbing, picking, and fragranced products that sting. Do not apply bleaching creams or strong acids without advice; irritated underarm skin can darken further. If bumps keep recurring, a clinician can assess for folliculitis, acne, or razor bumps and select treatment based on whether inflammation or pigment is dominant.

Arrange a medical review if a spot is rapidly changing, persistently bleeding, repeatedly draining, very painful, warm and expanding, or accompanied by fever. Seek prompt assessment for a firm lump that does not settle, or for a rash spreading beyond the armpit. Urgency depends on these warning features, not simply on the fact that the skin looks dark.

Ask whether the marks look like post-inflammatory pigment, folliculitis, acne, or irritation; whether you should change shaving or deodorant habits; and which treatment is appropriate for the current texture. Ask how long to try it and what change should prompt a follow-up.
