What should you know about dark red spots on skin?

A spot centred on a hair follicle may occur with folliculitis or shaving-related razor bumps. Recurrent spots on the face can be a presentation of acne, including hormonal acne. Redness and bumps around the mouth can occur with perioral dermatitis, while central facial redness with flushing can occur with rosacea. Pus, crusting, soreness, or clusters after hair removal help a clinician narrow the possibilities. The presence of spots does not by itself identify one condition.

Wash gently, keep hands off the area, and pause new or fragranced products until the skin settles. Avoid squeezing, close shaving over active bumps, and heavy occlusive products if they seem to worsen the area. Note the body site, relation to shaving or sweating, and whether spots itch, hurt, or contain fluid.
