Short answer

Dark orangish urine may be temporary concentration after sleep, but continued discolouration or associated symptoms should be checked.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What may be behind it

The overnight gap without drinking makes urine more concentrated, which can deepen its usual yellow into an orangish shade. This is more noticeable with thirst, dry mouth, sweating or reduced urination. Some foods, vitamins and medicines can add colour. If the appearance persists after normal drinking, consider other explanations, including bile pigment in urine. Yellowing of the skin or eyes, pale stools, itching, nausea or pain in the upper abdomen are important accompanying details. Dark orangish urine is a sign to interpret with the whole symptom pattern, not a diagnosis on its own.

A sensible plan

Observe the next samples after returning to your normal fluid routine, provided you have no prescribed fluid restriction. Write down when the colour appears, whether it changes later, and any smell, pain, burning, fever or bowel changes. Include recent exercise, hot weather, vomiting or diarrhoea in your notes. Check new medicines and supplements with a pharmacist, but do not discontinue prescribed treatment without guidance. If the orangish colour persists or repeatedly returns, arrange a clinical review and ask whether urine or blood testing is needed. See [Dehydration](/conditions/dehydration/) for related signs.

Warning signs

Seek urgent help for fainting, confusion, severe weakness, repeated vomiting, severe abdominal pain, very little urine or fever with severe illness. Seek prompt medical review for blood in urine, painful urination, yellow eyes or skin, pale stools, ongoing itching or flank pain. After time in heat, dizziness, headache, weakness, nausea or heavy sweating can be symptoms of [Heat Exhaustion](/conditions/heat-exhaustion/) and should receive timely attention.

Preparing for an appointment

Explain whether the colour is limited to waking or remains through the day. Ask how your hydration, medicines, supplements and recent illness affect the interpretation. Tell the clinician about urinary or abdominal symptoms and ask whether a urine sample, blood tests or examination is appropriate. Confirm which changes mean you should seek same-day help.
