What should you know about dark orange red urine?

Deeply concentrated urine after sleep, sweating, exercise, vomiting, or diarrhoea can look orange. Dehydration often comes with thirst, dry mouth, headache, dizziness, or passing less urine. Some foods, medicines, and supplements can add orange or red pigment, so note anything newly started.

A red, smoky, rust-coloured, or cola-like appearance may represent blood or another pigment from the urinary system. Orange-brown urine with yellow eyes or skin, pale stools, nausea, or upper abdominal discomfort can occur with liver or bile disorders such as hepatitis A or hepatitis B. Colour alone cannot show which explanation applies.

If you feel well and have no fluid restriction, drink normally and observe the next few samples without trying to force large amounts. Note the exact shade, urine amount, pain, burning, fever, clots, recent exercise, foods, medicines, and menstrual bleeding if relevant. Do not dismiss a red tint that returns or continues; arrange a clinical assessment and take a medicine list with you.

Seek urgent care for clots, inability to pass urine, severe side or abdominal pain, faintness, confusion, very little urine, or severe weakness. Prompt assessment is also needed for fever with urinary symptoms, yellowing, brown urine, or a red colour that does not quickly clear.
