What can cause dark lines on the neck?

A line that follows a natural crease may become more visible when skin rubs, dries, or catches light. Acanthosis nigricans tends to create broader darker areas with a thicker or velvety surface rather than a simple surface mark. Eczema, contact irritation, previous inflammation, and sun exposure can also leave uneven colour. A clinician may ask when it began, whether it itches, and whether similar areas occur in the armpits or groin. A photograph taken in consistent light can help you describe change over time.

Keep the area clean with a mild cleanser and apply a plain moisturiser after washing. Reduce rubbing from collars, jewellery, or fragranced products, and use sun protection on exposed skin. Avoid lemon juice, harsh scrubs, and unprescribed steroid or bleaching mixtures. If the lines are part of a thicker pigment condition, treating the cause is more useful than polishing the surface. After assessment, a dermatologist may discuss topical retinoids, chemical peels, or laser toning, depending on the diagnosis and your risk of post-inflammatory colour change.

Arrange medical review if the lines are new and persistent, spreading, thickening, bleeding, painful, or associated with a rash. Seek earlier advice when several skin folds change together or when you have symptoms such as unusual thirst, frequent urination, or significant fatigue. Sudden change deserves assessment even when there is no discomfort.
