Can a dark neck be linked to diabetes?

Acanthosis nigricans often appears as darker, thicker skin with a soft or velvety feel. It may develop gradually on the neck and can also affect the armpits or other folds. Insulin resistance can encourage skin cells to grow and pigment more noticeably. Other explanations include friction, irritation, certain medicines, hormonal conditions, or a different pigment disorder. A clinician can examine the texture and distribution and decide whether blood-glucose testing is appropriate.

Arrange a routine medical review if the change is new, spreading, or accompanied by thirst, frequent urination, unusual tiredness, or changes in weight. Do not scrub hard or apply strong lightening products without guidance, because irritation can deepen pigmentation. Use a gentle cleanser, moisturiser, and sun protection on exposed neck skin. If the underlying cause is addressed, the colour and texture may improve gradually; a dermatologist can discuss options such as topical retinoids, chemical peels, or laser toning when suitable.

Seek prompt medical advice for rapidly spreading darkening, marked thickening, severe itch, pain, oozing, or a rash that does not settle. Arrange an assessment sooner if the change appears suddenly or involves many body folds, particularly when you also feel unwell.
