What should you know about dark marionette lines?

Marionette lines run from the corners of the mouth toward the chin. As facial structure and skin support change, a crease can cast a shadow that appears darker. Sun exposure, post-inflammatory pigment, smoking, dehydration, and repeated facial movement may add colour or texture. The line can be more visible when the face is relaxed, or mainly appear during expression. Wrinkles elsewhere may help a clinician understand whether the concern is primarily etched texture, a fold caused by volume shift, or surface pigmentation.

Use daily sun protection, moisturise regularly, and avoid smoking and harsh scrubbing. These habits may support skin quality but cannot recreate lost volume. A qualified practitioner can assess the line at rest and with movement before discussing treatment. Dermal fillers may soften a fold when volume and shadowing contribute. A thread lift is a different procedure with different benefits, limits, and risks; it is not a direct substitute for every line. Treatment should be tailored to facial anatomy and skin tone.

Arrange a routine assessment if a dark line is new, changing quickly, itchy, scaly, bleeding, crusted, or confined to a patch that does not settle. Seek prompt advice for sudden facial weakness, marked swelling, severe pain, or a rapidly changing lesion.
