What should you know about dark hypertrophic scar?

Hypertrophic scars form when healing tissue remains thicker than the surrounding skin. They may feel firm, itchy, tender, or tight and can gradually soften and flatten. Darker colour may follow inflammation or increased pigment after the wound heals, especially in deeper skin tones. A scar that grows beyond the original injury may represent a different scar pattern and should be examined.

Protect the area from sun exposure and avoid scratching or repeatedly rubbing it. A dermatologist may discuss silicone-based care, injections placed into the scar, fractional laser treatment, or surgery depending on thickness, symptoms, location, and maturity. Treatment often targets both texture and colour, and the plan should account for the possibility of pigment changes after procedures.

Book an assessment if the scar becomes rapidly larger, increasingly painful, ulcerated, warm, or drains fluid. Seek review for persistent bleeding or a new change that does not fit the original wound. Early assessment can distinguish a healing scar from infection or another skin growth.
