What should you know about dark fizzy urine?

Urine can look darker when you have not taken in enough fluid, especially after sweating, exercise, heat exposure, or sleeping. A strong stream can also create temporary bubbles in the toilet. Colour may be affected by foods, vitamins, or medicines. Dark brown urine, rather than deep yellow urine, can sometimes occur with liver or bile problems, including hepatitis. The appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Notice the colour in a clean, clear container if you need to describe it, and record whether the bubbles disappear quickly. Drink fluids regularly unless a clinician has told you to restrict them. Think about recent heat, exercise, new medicines, supplements, or foods. If the urine returns to its usual colour and the fizz settles, continue observing. Arrange a clinical review if the change keeps returning, lasts beyond a short period, or comes with burning, urgency, swelling, or unusual tiredness.

Seek urgent care for very dark or brown urine with yellow skin or eyes, severe abdominal pain, confusion, fainting, inability to keep fluids down, or very little urine. Prompt assessment is also sensible for fever, back or side pain, blood in the urine, or marked weakness. These symptoms can signal dehydration, infection, liver problems, or another condition needing examination.

Ask whether you need a urine test, blood tests, or a review of medicines and supplements. Tell the clinician when the colour and fizz began, whether it occurs every time, how much you are drinking, and whether you have pain, fever, itching, pale stools, yellowing, or swelling.
