Dark Dry Spots on the Face: What to Know

A blemish, picking, shaving, or a harsh product can inflame facial skin and leave a darker mark as it heals. Acne and Folliculitis may create spots that later become discoloured. Around the mouth, burning or fine scale can fit Perioral Dermatitis; central facial redness with sensitivity can occur with Rosacea. Hormonal Acne is another possible pattern when breakouts repeatedly cluster around the lower face, but a dark dry spot alone does not identify its cause.

Look at the surface as well as the colour: flaking, a ring-shaped edge, tiny bumps, tenderness, and itch provide useful clues. Take a note of new cosmetics, retinoids, shaving, or sun exposure.

Use a gentle cleanser, a plain moisturiser, and daily broad-spectrum sun protection. Stop scrubs, picking, fragranced products, and newly introduced actives until the skin calms. Avoid applying strong steroid or lightening creams near the eyes or mouth without guidance. If pimples are present, treat the underlying breakout rather than repeatedly rubbing the dark marks; a clinician can decide whether LED Light Therapy or another option is suitable after diagnosis.

Photograph the area in consistent light so you can notice genuine change. Arrange a review if the spot remains scaly despite simple care or if several new areas appear.

Seek a dermatology assessment for a spot that enlarges, bleeds, crusts, becomes painful, forms an ulcer, or changes in outline or colour. Prompt care is appropriate for facial swelling, eye involvement, spreading redness, pus, or fever. Persistent dryness around the mouth or eyes also warrants tailored treatment because those areas can be easily irritated.

Ask whether the mark follows Acne, Folliculitis, irritation, or another condition; which products to pause; how to protect it from sunlight; and whether pigment treatment should wait until inflammation and scale have settled.
