What should you know about dark colored urine dehydration?

Short answer
Dark colored urine can be a sign of dehydration when the body is conserving water after fluid loss.

How dehydration changes urine
When fluid is lost through sweating, diarrhea, vomiting, fever or not drinking enough, the kidneys conserve water. Urine may become darker, stronger-smelling and less frequent. Thirst, dry lips, headache, tiredness or light-headedness can occur alongside it. Gastroenteritis and Heat Exhaustion are possible settings for fluid loss. Dark color alone does not prove dehydration: cloudy urine, blood, liver-related pigment and some medicines can look different.
Steps that may help
If you are alert and able to drink, take frequent small sips of water and replace fluids lost through sweating or stomach upset. Rest somewhere cool after heat exposure. Track whether urine becomes lighter and whether you are passing it more normally. Do not force large amounts quickly if you feel nauseated, and ask a clinician about fluid advice if you have kidney, heart or liver disease. Avoid treating persistent dark urine as dehydration without checking other symptoms.
When to get help
Contact a clinician when dark urine persists, follows a new medicine, or comes with burning, cloudy urine, fever, back or side pain, or swelling. Urgent care is needed for fainting, confusion, severe weakness, inability to drink, repeated vomiting, very little urine, or severe pain. Heat-related confusion or collapse is an emergency. Kidney Stones and Urinary Tract Infection can require specific treatment.
