Dark brown yellow urine: what to know

Deep yellow urine commonly occurs when urine is concentrated after sweating, fever, diarrhoea, vomiting, or simply drinking less. A brown or tea-like shade is less specific: it can involve bile pigments, blood, muscle pigment, or a medicine effect. The shade should be considered alongside how often you urinate and how you feel.

Burning, urgency, or cloudy urine points toward urinary irritation or infection, while yellow eyes, pale stools, or widespread itching suggest a liver or bile-flow concern. Muscle pain or weakness after strenuous activity adds a different reason for prompt review.

Unless a clinician has limited your fluids, drink regularly and avoid waiting until you feel very thirsty. Check whether the colour changes at different times of day, and note recent heat exposure, illness, exercise, foods, medicines, and supplements. Arrange an appointment if the colour does not settle, keeps returning, or has no clear explanation.

Seek urgent care for very little urine, severe weakness, confusion, fainting, repeated vomiting, fever with side or back pain, yellow skin or eyes, or visible blood. Do not delay if you are pregnant or have known kidney or liver disease.
