What dark brown urine can indicate

Deep yellow urine often reflects concentration after not drinking enough, fluid loss, or overnight fasting. Brown, tea-coloured, or cola-coloured urine can arise from blood or pigments released when muscle is injured, as well as from bile entering urine during some liver conditions. Dehydration and heat exhaustion can reduce urine volume. The symptom itself does not identify one diagnosis: the timing, amount, medicines, recent exercise, and associated symptoms all add useful clues.

Look at the urine in good light and note whether the colour affects one sample or continues. Record recent fluids, food dyes, medicines, supplements, strenuous activity, pain, fever, and urinary symptoms. Drink normally unless fluid restriction applies to you. Arrange a clinician review if the urine stays brown, returns without an obvious explanation, or differs from your usual pattern; testing can distinguish blood, pigment, infection, and liver-related causes.

Seek urgent help for very little or no urine, severe side or abdominal pain, visible clots, fainting, confusion, marked weakness, or inability to keep fluids down. Yellow eyes or skin, pale stools, fever, painful urination, or swelling should be assessed promptly. After intense exercise or an injury, brown urine with muscle pain or weakness needs urgent evaluation.
