What should you know about dark blood in sputum?

Dark or rusty sputum may contain older blood from the nose, throat, or airways. A small streak after forceful coughing can occur with irritation, but blood in phlegm should not be dismissed when it repeats or has no clear explanation. Note whether the blood is streaked through mucus, forms clots, or is mostly blood, and whether it came from coughing rather than vomiting.
