What do dark and frothy urine mean?

Froth may appear when urine hits the water quickly or when residue is present in the bowl. Concentrated urine after sweating, vomiting, diarrhoea, or heat exposure looks darker and may seem more bubbly; Dehydration and Heat Exhaustion are relevant causes of fluid loss.

Persistent froth can be associated with protein in urine. Dark urine with yellowing of the eyes or skin, pale stools, or nausea can occur with Hepatitis A or Hepatitis B. Foods and medicines may also change colour. Appearance alone cannot tell which explanation applies.

Keep to normal fluid intake if you are able and watch the next few urine samples. Note whether the froth clears, whether colour changes, and whether you develop ankle or eyelid swelling. Avoid taking someone else’s medicine.

If froth recurs or the dark colour persists without a clear explanation, book an appointment. A fresh urine test can look for protein, blood, infection, and concentration.

Seek urgent help for breathlessness, marked swelling, confusion, fainting, very little urine, severe weakness, or inability to keep fluids down. Contact a clinician promptly for fever, painful urination, blood in urine, severe pain, or yellow eyes or skin.
