Urine is commonly darker after sleep or after sweating because the body has conserved water. A change that clears after regular fluids may fit that pattern; a persistent change deserves attention.

Possible reasons for the colour change

When there is less water in urine, its normal yellow pigment becomes more concentrated and may look deep yellow, amber, or orange. Heat, vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, and strenuous activity can contribute to dehydration. Some vitamins, medicines, and strongly coloured foods can also alter urine colour. Tea-coloured urine with yellowing of the eyes or skin, pale stools, or itch can point to a liver or bile-flow problem and needs prompt assessment.

If you are otherwise well and can drink normally, sip water regularly and notice whether the urine becomes lighter over the day. Replace fluids after sweating or stomach upset, and rest in a cool place if heat exposure is involved. Check the label or ask a pharmacist about recently started medicines or supplements rather than stopping prescribed treatment on your own. Keep note of the colour, when it started, fluid intake, pain, fever, and any change in stool or skin colour to share with a clinician.

When to seek medical care

Seek urgent medical care for dark urine with severe weakness, confusion, fainting, inability to keep fluids down, very little urine, severe abdominal pain, or blood in the urine. Arrange a medical review soon if the colour stays dark despite drinking, recurs without a clear reason, or comes with burning when passing urine, fever, back pain, yellow eyes or skin, or pale stools. These symptoms can require urine tests, blood tests, or an examination to identify the cause.
