Dandruff when you scratch your head: what it means

Short answer
Dandruff that appears when you scratch often reflects loose surface scale, while repeated scratching can injure the scalp and worsen irritation.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why scratching releases flakes
Scratching lifts skin cells that were already loosening from the scalp, so flakes may fall onto your shoulders or collect beneath your nails. It can also create tiny breaks in the skin, increasing soreness and making the itch-scratch cycle harder to stop.
Itchy scalp may occur with dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis, but itch and flaking can also accompany eczema, psoriasis, contact irritation, or infection. The symptom pattern matters: burning after a new product differs from greasy scale or a tender patch.
Protect the scalp
Keep nails short and press or tap the area instead of digging into it. Cleanse gently with lukewarm water, rinse thoroughly, and avoid harsh brushes, very hot dryers, and fragranced products that sting. A cool compress may make the urge to scratch easier to manage.
If recommended for your symptoms, use a medicated shampoo therapy according to its directions. Do not apply strong or unfamiliar products to broken skin without advice. Note when itching occurs and whether a product, sweat, or washing change precedes it.
When to seek care
Seek care if scratching causes bleeding, open sores, yellow crust, pus, or increasing pain. Arrange a review for patchy hair loss, thick scale, a spreading rash, or itch that disrupts sleep or continues despite suitable care. Broken skin may need treatment and a check for infection.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the itch fits dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, or another condition, and which product is safe if the skin is scratched open. Mention bleeding, hair changes, new products, and how the symptoms affect sleep or daily activities.

Questions people ask
Why do more flakes appear after scratching?
Scratching dislodges loose surface scale and can also create irritation that produces more visible shedding.
Can scratching cause hair loss?
Repeated trauma can break hairs or damage the skin. Patchy hair loss should be assessed rather than treated by more scratching or scrubbing.
