Dandruff and sores on the scalp

Dandruff commonly presents with flakes and itching; repeated scratching can make tiny breaks in the skin. Those breaks may sting, bleed, scab, or become vulnerable to infection. A sore scalp can also reflect seborrheic dermatitis, folliculitis, eczema, psoriasis, a contact reaction, or a fungal infection. The appearance matters: greasy scale with redness differs from pus-filled bumps, thick plaques, or a sharply defined patch with hair breakage. Avoid assuming every sore is caused by dandruff.

Pause scratching, picking, close shaving, and hair practices that pull or rub the area. Wash gently with lukewarm water and keep fingernails short. Do not apply alcohol, bleach, undiluted essential oils, or leftover prescription creams to an open sore. A medicated shampoo may be appropriate for intact surrounding scalp, but do not force it into a painful wound. A clinician can decide whether medicated shampoo treatment or topical antifungal treatment fits the diagnosis.

Arrange medical review for recurring sores, bleeding, pus, yellow crusts, painful bumps, spreading redness, swelling, or patchy hair loss. Seek prompt care if redness is rapidly expanding, the area feels hot, or fever and unwellness develop. A sore that does not settle after gentle care should be examined rather than repeatedly treated as dandruff.

Ask whether scratching, inflammation, infection, or a product reaction is responsible. Mention drainage, pain, hair loss, recent barbering, hair dye, and every shampoo or treatment used on the affected area.
