What should you know about dandruff on newborn?

Cradle cap can look like greasy yellow or dry white scale on the scalp. It may extend toward the hairline, eyebrows, or behind the ears. Babies are often not bothered by it, although some have mild irritation. The appearance alone cannot confirm the cause: redness, oozing, marked itch, blisters, or scale beyond the usual areas deserves a clinician’s view. It is not a sign that a caregiver has failed to wash the baby.

Wash the scalp with a mild baby cleanser and use your fingertips, never your nails. A soft brush can loosen scale only when it lifts easily; do not pick, scrape, or pull attached flakes. Avoid adult dandruff shampoos, essential oils, fragranced products, and medicated creams unless a clinician specifically recommends them for your baby. Keep products away from the eyes and stop if the skin becomes more red or sore.

Contact the baby’s clinician if the scalp is very red, swollen, cracked, bleeding, wet, foul-smelling, or tender. Seek prompt advice if your newborn has a fever, seems unusually unwell, feeds poorly, or develops blisters. Arrange a routine review when scaling persists, spreads, causes scratching, or does not respond to gentle washing.
