Dandruff on the ears

The skin behind the ears, in the crease where the ear meets the head, and around the outer ear can react alongside the scalp. Flakes may be white, yellow, or greasy, with itch or mild redness. Seborrheic dermatitis is a common explanation when scalp scale and facial-area flaking appear together. Eczema, psoriasis, contact irritation, and infection can resemble it. The ear canal is delicate and should not be treated like scalp skin.

Clean the outer ear and the skin behind it with lukewarm water and a mild cleanser, then pat dry. Do not use cotton buds, fingernails, or sharp tools to scrape flakes from the ear canal. Avoid fragranced hair products running onto the area, and stop products that sting. A clinician may recommend a suitable medicated shampoo for scalp dandruff or a carefully selected topical antifungal treatment for nearby skin; do not place either in the ear canal unless specifically instructed.

Seek prompt medical advice for ear pain, reduced hearing, fluid or pus, marked swelling, warmth, bleeding, or a rapidly worsening rash. Arrange a dermatology review when flakes keep returning, spread to the face, or do not improve with gentle care. Examination matters because treatment differs between outer-ear skin and the ear canal.
