Dandruff-like flakes on the scalp

Loose white or yellow scale can appear when scalp skin sheds more quickly or becomes irritated. Dandruff commonly affects the scalp without causing a thick rash. Seborrheic dermatitis can add redness, itch, and greasy scale, and may also affect areas around the ears, eyebrows, or nose. Dry air, harsh products, infrequent washing, or scratching can make visible flakes worse. Keep styling products away from irritated skin, and stop any new product that causes burning or a rash. Do not put concentrated oils, household remedies, or steroid products on the scalp without suitable advice.

Arrange a dermatology review if flaking continues despite careful washing, repeatedly returns, or interferes with sleep. Seek prompt care for bleeding, pus, marked swelling, tender crusts, sudden hair loss, or a painful rash. A clinician can examine the scalp and choose between approaches such as medicated shampoo therapy or topical antifungal treatment when appropriate.
