What should you know about dandruff in winter?

Cold outdoor air and heated indoor rooms can make the scalp feel dry or tight. Wool hats, infrequent washing, hot showers, and heavy styling products may trap oil or irritate the skin. Scratching can create small breaks that increase soreness and scaling.

Simple dryness often feels tight and produces fine flakes, while dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis may involve itch, redness, and greasy or adherent scale. Psoriasis, eczema, contact dermatitis, and infection can look similar, so worsening winter flakes do not establish one diagnosis.

Use lukewarm rather than very hot water, massage shampoo gently with the fingertips, and rinse thoroughly. Choose a mild, fragrance-free product if your scalp is sensitive. Wash hats and avoid wearing damp headwear. Limit scratching, oils, and fragranced styling products when they increase itch or buildup.

If a clinician recommends medicated shampoo therapy, use it as directed and allow the product to contact the scalp for the stated time. Do not combine multiple active treatments without checking that the routine is suitable.

Arrange care when winter flaking is persistent, returns every season, or does not improve with gentle care. A dermatology review is especially useful for thick plaques, marked redness, bleeding, scalp pain, hair loss, or scale extending to the face or ears. Seek prompt help for pus, fever, or rapidly worsening swelling.

Ask whether the pattern fits dandruff, dry skin, seborrheic dermatitis, or another condition, and which washing schedule or treatment is suitable. Mention indoor heating, hats, hair dye, new products, and any seasonal pattern.
