What should you know about dandruff in one spot?

A patch can form where a product, sweat, friction, hat, or scratching has irritated the skin. Dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis may also begin as a limited area of scale. Look at the patch rather than the flakes alone: redness, a greasy surface, thick scale, a clear border, tenderness, broken hairs, or hair loss can change the likely explanation. A single spot does not by itself identify the cause.

Avoid rubbing and pause any new product that touches the area. Wash the scalp gently, rinse away residue, and keep a note of whether the patch grows, becomes sore, or appears elsewhere. Do not peel off attached scale or share combs, brushes, hats, or towels if infection is a concern. A clinician may recommend a medicated shampoo treatment or topical antifungal treatment after examining the patch and surrounding scalp.

Book an assessment if the patch remains after gentle care, enlarges, returns in the same place, or causes significant itch. Seek prompt care for pain, pus, bleeding, thick crust, a rapidly spreading rash, broken hairs, or a smooth area of hair loss. These changes can signal inflammation or infection requiring targeted treatment.
