What should you know about dandruff in locs?

Dandruff is shedding from the scalp, often seen as white or yellow flakes with itching or irritation. Hair that is gathered into locs can make loose scale harder to remove and may hold moisture or product close to the scalp. Seborrheic dermatitis can also affect the scalp and produce greasy scale, redness, or soreness. Flaking limited to the scalp is different from buildup along the hair itself, so a close look at the skin matters.

Wash the scalp according to the instructions for your chosen product, working the cleanser onto the skin between locs rather than scrubbing the locs harshly. Rinse thoroughly so residue does not remain, then dry the roots and scalp completely. Avoid picking, tight styles, and heavy oils or fragranced products while the area is irritated. A clinician may suggest a medicated shampoo treatment or topical antifungal treatment, depending on the appearance. Do not put a product near the eyes or use a prescription medicine without directions.
