Dandruff During Pregnancy: What Should You Know?

Hormonal shifts can alter oil production and skin sensitivity, so a previously familiar scalp routine may feel irritating or less effective. White or yellow flakes, itching and mild redness can occur with dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis. Dandruff is not a sign that pregnancy is harming the baby, but products placed on the scalp should still be chosen thoughtfully.

Wash regularly with a mild shampoo and rinse thoroughly. Avoid scratching, very hot water, tight headwear and heavily fragranced products if they worsen irritation. If flakes persist, ask your obstetric or dermatology clinician to review the exact shampoo or lotion before use; they can consider a medicated shampoo treatment or topical antifungal treatment in the context of your pregnancy, allergies and other medicines.

Arrange a clinical assessment if the scalp is painful, oozing, markedly swollen, developing crusts, or losing hair in patches. Seek prompt advice if itching is severe, spreads beyond the scalp, or prevents sleep. A clinician can check whether another skin condition or infection is contributing rather than assuming every flake is dandruff.
