Is dandruff contagious?

Dandruff is associated with naturally occurring scalp yeast, skin oils, barrier changes, and inflammation. These factors interact differently from person to person, so sharing a room, sitting close, or touching someone’s hair does not usually transmit dandruff.

Flakes can look similar to signs of other scalp conditions. Seborrheic dermatitis may cause greasy scale and redness, while an itchy or flaky scalp can also result from irritation, psoriasis, or infection. Scalp ringworm is a separate contagious fungal condition and may need different care, particularly when there are broken hairs or distinct patches.

Treat your own symptoms with regular scalp cleansing and a suitable anti-dandruff product. A medicated shampoo may help control scale and inflammation when used according to its instructions. Do not share combs, brushes, hats, or towels if anyone has a suspected scalp infection, even though ordinary dandruff itself is not usually spread.

Wash reusable hair tools and avoid picking flakes from the scalp. If several household members develop itching, patches, or broken hairs, arrange medical advice so an infection can be considered rather than assuming it is dandruff.

Seek medical advice for a child with a scaly patch and broken hairs, or for any person with scalp pain, pus, swelling, marked redness, or spreading lesions. Arrange a review when itching and flaking continue despite appropriate care or when hair loss appears.

Ask whether the scalp findings are consistent with dandruff, whether household contacts need checking for infection, and which shampoo or topical antifungal treatment is appropriate.
