Dandruff and hairfall: what to know

Short answer
Dandruff may cause itching and scratching, while ongoing hairfall should be assessed for its own pattern and triggers.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Understanding dandruff with hairfall
Dandruff is scalp flaking that can become more noticeable with oil, dryness, or irritation. Hairfall may seem heavier during washing because shed hairs are released at once; scratching can also weaken hairs close to the scalp. That does not establish dandruff as the cause of all hairfall. A receding hairline, widening part, smooth bald patch, or diffuse shedding after a physical or emotional strain points toward other possibilities such as pattern hair loss, telogen effluvium, alopecia areata, or traction alopecia.
Practical scalp care
Choose a medicated shampoo suited to your symptoms and follow its label or clinician’s directions. Massage gently with fingertips rather than nails, rinse thoroughly, and avoid picking scale. Reduce tight braids, extensions, heat, and harsh chemical processing while you work out what is happening. Note when the hairfall began, whether it is diffuse or patchy, and any recent illness, stress, diet change, or medication. This history helps a clinician distinguish shedding from breakage or follicle loss.
When a check-up matters
Book an assessment if hairfall continues, leaves visible thinning, or appears in sharply defined areas. Get prompt care for scalp tenderness, crusting, pus, swollen glands, or scaling with broken hairs, particularly in a child. Flaking that does not settle with appropriate shampoo may be seborrheic dermatitis or another scalp condition requiring a tailored plan.
Useful questions
Ask how your clinician classifies the hairfall, whether the scalp needs a closer examination, how long to try a shampoo, and whether another treatment is needed for inflammation or a separate hair disorder.

Questions people ask
Does hairfall from dandruff grow back?
Hair that breaks from scratching may grow as the scalp settles, but continuing shedding or a bald patch can reflect another condition and should be reviewed.
Can oily hair make dandruff worse?
Oil and scalp irritation can make flakes more noticeable for some people; a suitable cleansing routine can help without harsh scrubbing.
