Dandruff and Dry Scalp: How to Tell Them Apart

Dry scalp often feels tight, especially after hot water, harsh cleansing, or dry air, and the flakes may be small and powdery. Dandruff may bring recurring white or yellowish scale, itch, and an oily or red scalp. These descriptions overlap, so appearance alone cannot confirm the cause. Seborrheic dermatitis is another reason for persistent scale around the scalp, hairline, ears, or eyebrows.

Wash with lukewarm water and choose a mild, fragrance-free cleanser if your scalp stings or feels tight. Do not scrape off scale or use oils as a substitute for diagnosis. For recurring dandruff, a medicated shampoo therapy may be more useful than switching between cosmetic shampoos. Use it exactly as directed and give the scalp time to settle. A dermatologist can decide whether topical antifungal treatment is suitable when inflammation or greasy scale is present.

Book an appointment when flaking lasts, spreads beyond the scalp, or interferes with sleep because of itch. Get earlier care for bleeding from scratching, marked redness, pain, thick plaques, facial involvement, or hair loss. Those signs can point to a condition other than simple dryness.
