How cystoscopy examines the urethra

The view can show narrowing, inflammation, injury or an abnormal area. Cystoscopy may also help explain difficulty passing urine, bleeding or recurrent urinary problems, but findings must be interpreted with your history and other tests.

The urethra carries urine from the bladder out of the body and provides the route for the cystoscope. A flexible scope is designed to follow this channel, while an operating cystoscope can accommodate instruments for sampling or treatment.

Sterile fluid may fill the bladder to improve visibility. This can create fullness and a strong urge to urinate. The examination plan, scope type and anesthesia differ according to whether the visit is for inspection alone or includes an intervention.

Tell the team about trouble passing catheters, known urethral narrowing, prior urinary surgery, active urinary symptoms and medicines that affect bleeding. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own; use the clinic's individualized instructions for medicines, food and fluids.

Relaxing the pelvic muscles and taking slow breaths may reduce tension as the scope is inserted. Following the visit, note whether urine flow is returning to your usual pattern and use the discharge contact if irritation becomes more pronounced rather than improving.

A little stinging or lightly blood-tinged urine can occur after instrumentation. Obtain prompt advice for increasing pain, cloudy or foul-smelling urine, fever or chills. Inability to urinate, severe pain, heavy bleeding or clots calls for urgent assessment because urine flow may be obstructed or an infection may need treatment.

Ask whether the urethra looked open throughout, whether any abnormal tissue was sampled and what the next test or treatment would address. It is also useful to confirm when results will arrive and what change in urinary flow should prompt an earlier review.
