What the Medical Term Cystoscopy Means

The instrument is called a cystoscope. It carries a light and camera or viewing system, allowing a urology clinician to inspect surfaces that are not directly visible on a routine physical examination.

A flexible cystoscope can bend as it follows the urinary passage and is often used for visual examination. A rigid cystoscope is straight and can provide a working channel for instruments. Biopsy means removing a small tissue sample for laboratory examination rather than relying only on appearance.

Cystoscopy can investigate blood in the urine, repeated urinary infections, troublesome urination, or an imaging finding. It may also monitor the bladder after treatment. Being offered the test does not establish a cancer diagnosis; the reason and possible findings differ among patients.

Read the appointment instructions and check whether the plan is examination only or may include biopsy or treatment. Give the clinic a current medicine list and mention allergies, medicines that alter clotting, possible pregnancy, urinary infection symptoms, and prior difficulty with anesthesia.

Urgent assessment is appropriate when these symptoms are severe or help is not available from the treating clinic.
