How cystoscopy is done

You lie on an examination or operating table while the urinary opening is cleaned and anaesthetic is given. The scope is guided into the bladder, sterile fluid gently expands the bladder for a clearer view, and the clinician inspects the lining. Instruments can pass through some scopes if sampling or treatment is planned.

A flexible cystoscope bends along the urinary passage and is often used for inspection with local anaesthetic gel. A rigid cystoscope is straight and provides a channel for a wider range of instruments; it is commonly used with regional or general anaesthesia when biopsy or treatment is expected.

The image is viewed through an eyepiece or on a screen. The clinician checks the urethra, the bladder lining, and the openings where urine enters from the ureters. Cystoscopy does not provide a complete view inside the kidneys or through the full ureters.

Confirm whether you may eat and drink, which regular medicines to take, and whether someone must accompany you home. Tell the service about pregnancy, allergies, blood-thinning treatment, infection symptoms, previous reactions to anaesthesia, and difficulty passing catheters.

Once home, use the discharge advice as your guide. Mild burning, urgency, or light blood staining can occur briefly. Fluids may help if you have not been given a restriction. The anaesthetic plan determines when driving, work, exercise, and other usual activities can resume.

Contact the procedure unit if pain or burning worsens instead of easing, bleeding increases, clots form, or fever, chills, cloudy urine, or a strong unusual urine smell develops. These changes may require assessment for infection, bleeding, or another complication.

Go for urgent assessment if you cannot pass urine, develop severe lower-abdominal or side pain, feel faint, or have heavy bleeding. Use the emergency instructions supplied by the service when they differ from routine follow-up.

Ask which scope and anaesthetic will be used, whether a biopsy or treatment might occur, and how discomfort is managed. Find out when you will hear the findings, whether temporary catheterisation is possible, what recovery restrictions apply, and who receives calls outside clinic hours.
