What should you know about cystoscopy and retrograde pyelogram?

A cystoscope enters through the urethra and allows a direct view of the bladder. For the pyelogram, contrast is placed through a ureter opening, then X-ray images trace the contrast as it moves toward the kidney. The pictures can help clarify a suspected narrowing, stone, blockage, leak or other change that was not fully explained by earlier tests.

Because the contrast is delivered from below, this examination differs from imaging in which contrast is injected into a vein. The clinician may treat a problem during the same session, such as placing a temporary drainage device, if that was discussed beforehand. The report must be considered alongside your symptoms and other results.

Share your history of contrast reactions, kidney disease, pregnancy, urinary infection and medicines that affect bleeding. Follow the clinic’s fasting and arrival instructions, and arrange help getting home if sedation is used. Temporary urinary burning, urgency or light bleeding can happen afterward. Follow fluid, activity and medicine instructions given by the treating team.

Get prompt advice for fever, chills, worsening back or side pain, persistent vomiting, heavy bleeding, clots or inability to pass urine. These signs may reflect infection, obstruction or bleeding and should not be ignored after an invasive urinary procedure.

Ask what earlier finding led to the pyelogram, whether contrast precautions are needed, what treatment might occur during the session, how long urinary irritation may last, and when the report will be available.
