What should you know about cystoscopy and hydrodistention?

A cystoscope is a slender instrument passed through the urethra into the bladder. The clinician views the lining and may look for inflammation, bleeding, unusual areas or another explanation for urinary symptoms. During hydrodistention, sterile fluid fills the bladder in a measured way while the team observes how it responds. The examination is usually done with anaesthesia or sedation, depending on the plan and your health.

This test can provide information that a routine examination cannot. It does not by itself prove or exclude every bladder condition, and a biopsy or another test may be needed if an area looks unusual. Bladder cancer is one condition clinicians may investigate when symptoms or findings warrant it.

Follow the clinic’s instructions about fasting, medicines and arranging transport if sedation or anaesthesia is planned. Tell the team about allergies, pregnancy, blood-thinning medicines, urinary infections and previous reactions to anaesthesia. Afterward, mild burning when passing urine, urgency or a small amount of blood can occur for a short time. Drink fluids if your clinician permits, rest as advised, and take only recommended pain relief.

Contact the treating team promptly for fever, chills, worsening pain, persistent heavy bleeding, clots, vomiting, or inability to pass urine. These symptoms can signal infection, significant bleeding or difficulty emptying the bladder and need timely assessment.

Ask why hydrodistention is recommended, what findings the team is looking for, which medicines to pause, how long urinary symptoms may last, and when results or biopsy findings will be discussed.
