What should you know about cyst under skin on back?

An epidermoid cyst is a sac beneath the skin that may contain keratin. On the back it can be difficult to see, and pressure from a chair, backpack, sports equipment, or sleep position may make it tender. Some cysts have a visible pore or discharge thick material if they open. A lipoma, abscess, inflamed follicle, or another lump can look similar, so a persistent swelling deserves assessment.

A calm, unchanged lump may be monitored after a clinician has identified it. Recurring inflammation, pain, drainage, snagging on clothing, or difficulty checking the area can support a discussion about treatment. The timing of removal may change if the skin is actively inflamed.

Avoid trying to drain the lump yourself, especially because the back is hard to examine and reach accurately. Reduce direct pressure, use gentle washing, and choose clothing or bags that do not rub the area. Take note of changes in size, redness, pain, or discharge so you can describe them at an appointment. Arrange prompt care if the area becomes hot, rapidly red, increasingly swollen, very painful, or begins draining pus, particularly with fever or chills. A hard or fixed lump, unexplained enlargement, bleeding, skin breakdown, or persistent pain also needs examination. These signs are not a diagnosis, but they should not be handled by squeezing or home incision.
