What should you know about cyst under skin groin?

A skin cyst in the groin may sit in hair-bearing skin and feel like a small, rounded nodule. Sweat, tight clothing, shaving, and repeated rubbing can make it sore or inflamed. A tender swelling with warmth, redness, or pus may be an abscess rather than a quiet cyst. Hidradenitis suppurativa and enlarged lymph nodes can also cause groin lumps, so location alone does not identify the cause.

A clinician may ask about shaving, discharge, recurrence, nearby lumps, and genital or urinary symptoms. The plan can range from observation to treatment of inflammation, drainage, or removal, depending on what the examination shows.

Avoid squeezing, piercing, waxing, or shaving directly over the lump. Keep the skin gently clean and dry, wear breathable loose clothing, and reduce rubbing during exercise. Do not apply harsh antiseptics or leftover medicines inside an opening. Arrange a review if the lump remains, repeatedly returns, interferes with movement, or causes uncertainty.

For selected inflammation, an intralesional steroid injection may be considered. If a collection of pus has formed, abscess drainage may be needed. Planned cyst removal can address the cyst and its capsule when appropriate, but the procedure and wound care depend on depth, position, and nearby structures.

Seek prompt attention for rapidly spreading redness, marked swelling, severe pain, pus, fever, chills, difficulty walking, or feeling unwell. Have a persistent, hard, fixed, or enlarging groin lump examined, particularly if it is not clearly within the skin. Do not delay care because a lump resembles a previous cyst.
