What should you know about cyst under skin?

An epidermoid cyst can feel like a round, smooth lump just beneath the surface. It may have a small central opening and can release thick, unpleasant-smelling material if it opens. Many cysts are not painful until they become irritated or inflamed. A similar-looking lump may instead be an abscess, swollen follicle, lipoma, or another skin change, so appearance is not enough to establish the diagnosis.

A clinician will consider the lump's duration, mobility, tenderness, colour, drainage, and recent change. Stable, comfortable cysts may be observed. Recurrent inflammation, persistent discomfort, interference with clothing or movement, or uncertainty about the diagnosis can make treatment more useful.

Do not squeeze, pierce, or attempt to empty the cyst. This can push material deeper, injure surrounding skin, and make later treatment harder. Use gentle cleansing and a warm, clean compress for comfort if the area is mildly irritated; stop if pain or redness increases. Book an assessment if the lump persists, changes, or keeps returning.

Treatment may include observation, a steroid injection into the skin for selected inflammation, drainage when an abscess is present, or planned cyst removal. Drainage can relieve pressure but may not remove the capsule, while complete removal is usually considered when the area is calm enough for the procedure. Follow the specific wound instructions given after treatment.

Seek prompt care if the lump becomes rapidly larger, hot, very tender, increasingly red, or begins releasing pus, especially with fever or feeling unwell. A lump that is hard, fixed, bleeding, ulcerated, or steadily enlarging also needs examination. These findings do not prove a serious cause, but they make self-treatment unsafe.
