What should you know about cyst under armpit removal?

A rounded lump in the armpit may be a skin cyst, an inflamed hair follicle, an abscess, or another type of swelling. A clinician checks its position, texture, tenderness, skin changes, and whether it moves beneath the skin. The underarm is exposed to sweat, shaving, deodorant, and rubbing, so irritation can make a cyst more noticeable. A diagnosis cannot be made reliably from appearance alone.

Removal is more likely to be discussed when the lump is painful, repeatedly inflamed, catches on clothing, drains, or remains troublesome. Cutting into an actively inflamed lump may not be the first step; the immediate plan can differ from the later plan to remove the cyst wall.

Arrange a clinical examination rather than squeezing or puncturing the lump at home. Keep the area clean and dry, choose loose clothing, and pause shaving over the swelling. Tell the clinician about previous drainage, medicines that affect bleeding, allergies, and any history of raised scars. If removal is advised, local anaesthetic is commonly used so the skin can be treated while you remain awake. Follow wound-care instructions, keep dressings as directed, and avoid friction until the site has settled.

Ask whether the whole cyst lining can be removed, because leaving capsule tissue may allow a cyst to return. The procedure may leave a small scar, and the exact wound plan depends on the lump's size, depth, and current inflammation.

Seek prompt medical attention if the armpit becomes rapidly more swollen, hot, very painful, or increasingly red, or if pus, fever, or feeling unwell develops. Arrange assessment for a lump that is hard, fixed, growing, persists without explanation, or is associated with unexplained weight loss or night sweats. These features do not identify a cause by themselves, but they should not be managed by home squeezing.
