What should you know about a cyst spreading under the skin?

A cyst itself is usually a contained structure, but inflammation can extend into nearby tissue and make the swollen area feel broader. If the wall leaks or ruptures, its contents may irritate surrounding skin and deeper tissue. Redness that expands, heat and increasing tenderness can also occur with an abscess or another infection. A changing skin lump cannot be identified reliably by touch alone.

Marking the edge of visible redness can help you notice whether it is expanding, but do not press the lump to test it. Keep the area clean, avoid tight clothing and do not puncture or squeeze it. Arrange clinical assessment if the change is new or progressing. Depending on findings, care may involve an intralesional steroid injection, abscess drainage or cyst removal.

Get prompt medical help when redness or swelling is expanding, pain is worsening, the skin is hot, drainage appears, or you develop fever, chills or red streaks. Seek urgent attention for confusion, faintness or swelling that interferes with breathing, swallowing, vision or movement. Rapid change matters even if the lump was previously painless.

Ask whether the change suggests inflammation, rupture, infection or a different skin lump. Ask whether you need same-day treatment, how to monitor the area, and whether the cyst lining may need removal after acute swelling settles.
