What should you know about a popped cyst on the scalp?

A cyst that breaks open may release thick or foul-smelling material and leave a tender opening in the scalp. The pressure may ease, but opening the surface does not necessarily remove the cyst wall, so the lump can refill or return. Drainage also makes it easier for bacteria to enter the skin.

The appearance of the fluid cannot reliably tell you whether the problem is a cyst, an abscess, or another skin lump. An examination is especially useful when the area is painful, red, or repeatedly draining.

Wash your hands, gently rinse the area with clean water, and pat it dry. Cover the opening with a clean dressing if it is rubbing against hair, clothing, or bedding, and change the dressing when it becomes wet or dirty. Do not dig into the opening, force out more material, or apply unprescribed creams. Avoid sharing combs, towels, or pillows until drainage has stopped.

Contact a clinician promptly if redness spreads, pain increases, the area becomes hot or swollen, drainage continues, or pus develops. Fever, swollen neck glands, red streaking, or feeling very unwell needs urgent medical attention. Arrange a review after the opening settles if a lump remains or returns, because further treatment may be needed.

Ask whether the wound needs cleaning or specific dressing care, whether the drainage suggests infection, and how to tell if it is healing. Ask what to do if the lump refills and whether cyst removal should be considered once inflammation has settled.
