Hard Cyst on the Scalp: What to Know

Pilar cysts form in relation to hair follicles and often have a firm, smooth feel because of the material inside their sac. Tenderness, redness, a central opening, movement under the fingers, and changes in the overlying hair or skin all help a clinician assess it. Hardness alone does not identify the cause.
