Cyst on the Pubic Area Under the Skin: What to Know

A skin cyst is a small sac under the surface that can contain keratin, a thick skin-cell material. In the pubic area, friction, shaving, or an ingrown hair can make a lump sore or irritated. A cyst may be separate from the genital or urinary structures, yet not every lump in this region is a cyst. The location and appearance need a clinician’s assessment, especially if the diagnosis is uncertain.

Wash gently, pat dry, and choose loose clothing while the area is sensitive. Pause shaving or waxing over the lump. Do not cut it open or try to force out its contents. Book an appointment if it remains, grows, recurs, or causes discomfort during walking or sitting. A clinician may discuss observation, an intralesional steroid injection for selected inflammation, abscess drainage if infection has collected, or cyst removal when the sac is repeatedly troublesome.

Arrange prompt care for increasing warmth, swelling, redness, throbbing pain, pus, fever, or redness spreading into nearby skin. Seek urgent help for severe pain, rapidly worsening swelling, difficulty passing urine, or feeling acutely unwell. A lump that bleeds, breaks down, feels fixed, or changes in a persistent way should be examined even without pain.

Ask whether the lump is in the skin, a hair follicle, or a nearby structure, and whether it appears inflamed or infected. Ask which treatment fits its current stage, how to care for the area afterward, and what changes would mean you should return sooner.
