Cyst under the armpit: what to know

The armpit contains hair follicles, sweat glands, lymph nodes, and folds that experience regular friction. A skin cyst usually forms within the skin and may feel like a distinct, rounded lump. It can be painless at first. Shaving, deodorant, tight sleeves, or repeated rubbing may aggravate the surrounding skin. Redness, warmth, tenderness, swelling, or drainage suggests inflammation or possible infection, but these findings do not identify the cause by themselves.

Because several structures sit in the armpit, a clinician should examine a lump that is deep, persistent, or difficult to move. The assessment may include checking the skin and nearby tissues rather than assuming every underarm lump is a cyst.

Pause shaving and avoid squeezing or trying to pop the lump. Keep the fold gently clean and dry, and wear clothing that reduces rubbing. A warm compress can ease discomfort for some people, but it will not reliably remove a cyst capsule. Book an assessment if the lump remains, recurs in the same spot, grows, or limits arm movement. Depending on the findings, care may involve an intralesional steroid injection for selected inflammation, abscess drainage, or cyst removal.

Get prompt care for rapidly increasing pain, spreading redness, marked warmth, pus, fever, chills, or feeling faint or unwell. An urgent assessment is also sensible when swelling makes arm movement difficult. A lump that is firm, fixed, persistent, or associated with other unexplained symptoms deserves a clinical examination even when the skin looks normal.

Ask whether the swelling is in the skin or deeper in the armpit, what signs suggest infection, and whether it needs monitoring. Discuss whether hair removal or deodorant may be aggravating it, which treatment fits the examination, and how to reduce rubbing while the area heals.
