Cyst in the head scalp: what to know

A pilar cyst develops in connection with a hair follicle and may sit beneath otherwise normal scalp skin. It can be smooth, dome-shaped, and mobile when gently examined. Some people notice no symptoms; others feel soreness when lying on it, wearing headwear, or washing the hair. A central opening is not always present.

The appearance of a head lump is not enough to diagnose it. A healthcare professional may ask how long it has been present, whether it has changed, and whether there has been discharge or trauma. Skin lumps can have several causes, so a persistent or unfamiliar one deserves a proper look.

Leave the lump intact and use gentle shampooing. Avoid home needles, blades, and forceful massage. Keep a simple record of changes in size, color, tenderness, or drainage, and take a clear private photograph for comparison if its position makes monitoring difficult. Book a review if it remains present or repeatedly catches on clothing, brushes, or pillows.
