CVS for a Down syndrome test: what should you know?

Down syndrome, also called trisomy 21, results from an extra copy or extra material from chromosome 21. Chorionic villus sampling examines placental cells for chromosome changes and can be offered when screening, an ultrasound finding or family history raises a question. CVS is diagnostic for the chromosome findings it examines, while NIPT and a nuchal translucency scan are screening assessments. A placental result may occasionally need further interpretation because placental cells and fetal cells do not always behave identically.

Discuss the reason for testing, the conditions included in the laboratory analysis, the procedure route, and when preliminary and final results may arrive. Ask how the result could affect pregnancy care and what counselling is available. Compare CVS with amniocentesis, including the stage of pregnancy, sample type and possible limitations. You do not have to decide based on a screening result alone; a genetics or fetal medicine appointment can help you weigh information against your values.

After CVS, follow your team’s advice about activity and observation. Seek urgent guidance for heavy bleeding, fluid leakage, strong or persistent abdominal pain, fever, chills, contractions or feeling faint. Contact the team if symptoms concern you even when they seem mild, and use the emergency route they provided if you feel seriously unwell.
