Can restless legs syndrome be cured?

Short answer
Restless legs syndrome does not have one universal cure, but symptoms can often be controlled by finding triggers and treating contributing causes.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical pattern
- An urge to move the legs that is worse during rest or later in the day
- Assessment
- Symptoms, medicines, health conditions, and sometimes iron testing are reviewed
What it means
Restless legs syndrome causes an urge to move the legs, often with crawling, pulling, or uncomfortable sensations. Symptoms commonly become stronger during rest and later in the day, and movement may bring temporary relief. The condition can interfere with sleep and concentration. It may occur on its own or alongside Iron Deficiency Anaemia, Chronic Kidney Disease, pregnancy, or certain medicines.
A GP Consultation can clarify the pattern, review medicines, and check for another explanation. A Blood Test may be used to assess iron stores and other relevant health factors. Do not take iron supplements unless a clinician advises them, because excess iron can be harmful.
What can help
Keep a regular sleep schedule, use gentle leg stretching or massage, and try a warm bath or heat pack before bed. Moderate daytime activity may help, while intense exercise close to bedtime can aggravate symptoms for some people. Notice whether caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, or medicines make the sensations worse.
If a deficiency or another condition is found, treating it may reduce symptoms. Prescription medicines can help some people, but choice depends on sleep, other conditions, and the possibility of symptoms becoming more troublesome over time. Discuss persistent symptoms rather than increasing a dose yourself.
When to seek care
Book an appointment when leg sensations repeatedly disturb sleep, affect work, or are becoming more frequent. Seek urgent care for a suddenly swollen, red, hot, or painful single leg, especially with breathlessness or chest pain; that pattern needs assessment for a different problem. New weakness, loss of balance, or loss of bladder control also warrants prompt medical review.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms fit restless legs syndrome, whether a Blood Test is appropriate, and whether any medicine or health condition could be contributing. Ask which sleep and movement changes are safe for you and how follow-up will measure improvement.

Questions people ask
Can restless legs syndrome go away?
Symptoms may settle when a contributing issue is treated or a trigger is removed, but they can also return and may need ongoing management.
Does restless legs syndrome always mean low iron?
No. Low iron is one possible contributor; symptoms can occur without iron deficiency and need a broader assessment.
