The short answer
Whooping cough needs medical assessment; antibiotics may reduce spread early, while rest, fluids, and breathing support help manage symptoms. The cough can continue after the infection is no longer easily spread, so recovery may require patience and monitoring.
What whooping cough does
Whooping cough, also called pertussis, is an infection of the airways. It may begin like a cold before developing into repeated coughing bouts, vomiting after coughing, or a sharp intake of breath. The characteristic whoop may be absent, especially in babies and adults. A Cough that is worsening, prolonged, or causing breathing difficulty should be assessed. Fever may be mild or absent, so its absence does not rule out the infection.
Treatment and reducing spread
A clinician may prescribe Antibiotic Treatment, particularly when the illness is identified early or someone vulnerable has been exposed. Take prescribed medicine as directed and ask when it is safe to return to school or work. Rest, drink little and often, avoid smoke and other airway irritants, and use a humidified environment only if it feels comfortable and safe. Cover coughs, wash hands, and avoid close contact with babies and pregnant people until advised.
Urgent warning signs
Seek emergency help for pauses in breathing, blue or grey lips, severe breathing difficulty, unusual sleepiness, collapse, or inability to keep fluids down. Babies may become unwell without a loud cough, so breathing changes, poor feeding, or repeated pauses need urgent assessment. Arrange prompt medical advice for a persistent Cough, repeated vomiting after coughing, or known exposure. Ask about Childhood Immunisation to protect children and reduce future spread.
What to ask
Ask whether testing or antibiotics are needed, how long close-contact precautions should last, how to manage coughing at night, and whether household members need advice. Tell the clinician about contact with a baby, pregnancy, immune problems, or a child who is not fully immunised.
